Chip 'n Dipped fits a whole lot of business into its 1,800 square feet. There's a proper confectionery, where chocolates, toffees, truffles, creams and bars (in 11 flavors) are molded and dipped. Excellent coffee can be enjoyed - in both drip and espresso forms - in the cafe. There's also Junior's cheesecakes, Haagen-Dazs ice creams and house-baked muffins and scones.
But everything started with a cookie. "My mom always made chocolate-dipped chocolate-chip cookies," said owner Peter Goldfarb. "And that was my inspiration."
Roberta Goldfarb's original version has now spawned a family of cookies - double chocolate, chocolate peanut butter, oatmeal raisin, etc. - all of which are baked throughout the day. After 11 a.m., there are always cookies sitting on a warming plate so customers can enjoy them at their tender, gooey best.
Goldfarb, a former television producer, says he dragged his parents out of retirement when he founded Chip 'n Dipped in 2006. The first store was about a mile-and-a-half outside of the village, a spot, he discovered, that generated little foot traffic. The less-than-ideal location pushed him to work hard on wholesale and mail-order, a pursuit that was mightily helped by his father, Art Goldfarb, "the marketing and design genius."
Being out of the limelight also gave him the opportunity to perfect his wares in relative obscurity. But on May 26, Chip 'n Dipped moved to its current location, right in the heart of Huntington Village.
"My parents always said it was a good idea to start out in a place with a lower rent while I was on my learning curve," he recalled. "Don't tell them, but they were 100 percent right." -- Erica Marcus
