Clothes are speaking volumes these days. Brands that range from inexpensive fast fashion to pricey designer are regularly being emblazoned with quick, clever messages. It's a fresh way for consumers to get their points across . . . instantly.
These fashion "statements" run the gamut -- a petulant type can toss on a tank that reads, "I'm not sorry," while an exercise-averse gal might find solace in a pair of sweatpants blaring the phrase, "Shopping is my cardio." No matter the sentiment, snappy slogans on clothes are definitively "in," evidenced by their abundance in the marketplace.
"It's the be-your-own-billboard generation and subtlety is not in style," says fashion expert Mary Alice Stephenson. "In the hope of catching the Pinterest generation's attention, brands have put words and messages front and center on their clothing. Why say how you feel when you can wear it with more impact?"
Stephenson says "the obsession with selfies and Instagram play into the trend," and she believes that buyers use the clothes to deliver messages by way of social networks. Recently, Khloé Kardashian Instagrammed a shot of herself at the gym wearing an "I WOKE UP LIKE THIS" shirt by Private Party) with a caption that read(along with a few other choice words): ". . . I definitely did not wake up like this." More than 247,000 people liked it.
At the Entrée Boutique in Port Washington, a $129 sweatshirt with the words, "Having a moment," sold out almost instantly and has been reordered twice. "It's like walking social media," says the store's co-owner Maureen Moser, who was unsure the shirt would move because of her sophisticated customer base. "I think it sold out because people can relate to the feeling. No words need to be spoken and it's another way of communicating."
