Ever heard of Elene Cassis? Neither had we, but then came an invitation for a presentation at the Bryant Park Hotel during Fashion Week, on the envelope of which was a hand-written note that said “Elene is a Long Island designer.”

Natch, the event went on right on our schedule. So, about Ms. Cassis. She’s a Smithtown native, graduated from Parsons in May, 2009 and launched her line--called Elene--in June, ‘09 (no slacker, she). On her web site (elenecassis.com) she says her mostly black-and-white line embraces “modern elegance” and is a celebration of “the graceful lines and curves of the female form.”

You can shop her spring collection now on line (priced from $410 to $1,000)--check out the french lace number worn by Liv Jones at the Grammy Awards last month.
All the fall pieces she showed this week are named for members of her family--her mom, her sister, her friends. We were especially intrigued by the Dorothy, named for Cassis’ grandmother. The fluttery silk chiffon strapless number suggest this is one hip grandma.

Next up for the young collection? More retail outlets, she says, especially one on Long Island.
