Main Beach Surf and Sport
352 Montauk Hwy. Wainscott, NY 631-537-7873
Across the street from Georgica Pond is a two-story shop stuffed with kayaks, canoes, surf boards, skateboards, paddle boards, bicycles, waterproof cameras, sunscreen, swimsuits, sporty clothing from Columbia and Patagonia and anything else beach-bound families could need.
Lars Svanberg, 52, fell in love with the Hamptons as a teen and opened the store 25 years ago. "If you love the water, this is the place to be," he says. "It all comes down to connecting with nature. That's why people come out here."
Svanberg says stand up paddle boarding has been the biggest boom for business lately, but more user-friendly equipment has also heightened surfing's popularity with women and men ages 40 to 60 in recent years.
In addition to door to door (or door to beach) deliveries, Main Beach offers lessons, rentals ($30 per day for boards and bikes, around $100 for boats) and adventure excursions that include paddling out to a destination for a bonfire and lobster bake or wine and cheese party ($25-225).
Want to avoid the Hamptons' steep parking fees? Park in their free lot and paddle across the pond to a private beach that Svanberg calls the area's best kept secret or pedal a cruiser down the road a few minutes for ocean access.Hours:
