We’ve seen her look flashier, but it was a serious dress for a serious moment as Michelle Obama played her role as first lady of fashion at the State of the Union address in a slightly more conservative manner than at past events.

That said, there was nothing fuddy or staid about the elegant Isaac Mizrahi dress she chose for the occasion, and she still managed to shine (though not outshine the main event) in the designer’s  “combo” pleated dress in a rich raisin shade.

The dress, from Mizrahi’s pre-fall 2009 collection, featured three-quarter sleeves (no famously muscled arms on display this night), a fitted cashmere top, black waistband and silk blend skirted bottom.

Somehow it managed to look both retro and sculpturally modern – a Mizrahi trademark.

The lush hue was a perfect backdrop for one of Obama’s favorite accessories -- a simple strand of pearls.  The dress retails for $1,850.  We think she looked smashing.
