New York Fashion Week Spring 2014 designer preview
Before designers show off their wares on the runways of Fashion Week, they channel their inspiration and sketch their creations. For the spring 2014 shows, which kick off Thursday at Lincoln Center and other locales around New York City, those inspirations ranged from Hollywood glamour queens to ancient tribes to modern art. Here's a peek at some of those fashionable inspirations (in the designers' own words). -- By Julie Gordon, amNew York
REBECCA MINKOFF "We looked at Bianca Jagger's life prior to her Studio 54 days, and we were drawn to her Latin American upbringing. Other influential Latin American women across all decades started coming to mind. . . The result was American sportswear-inspired pieces with strong Latin American details."
BETSEY JOHNSON "It's all about having an easy prescription for dressing. It's my personal favorite stuff. You take your 'one-a-day Betsey' pill just as the doctor ordered and call me in the morning."
J. CREW "I imagined a movie about the beach with two stories happening simultaneously. The first centers around surfing the California coast . . . This rugged sportiness is set against a second story: the European beach culture at the turn of the century."
TRACY REESE "Tracy Reese spring 2014 radiates sensuality, energy and optimism with an array of bold, spirited styles infused with Afro-Cuban influences to create an aesthetic full of texture and movement."
CHRISTIAN SIRIANO "My spring 2014 collection is primarily inspired by a recent trip to Mexico's Isla Mujeres: the 'Island of Women.' I took influence from the shapes and imagery of grass-lined huts, picturesque color-blocked residential streets, stonework and the locally-abundant dahlia. . . . The collection, like the island, is dramatic, powerful, bright, romantic and light."
CARMEN MARC VALVO "Beaded and embroidered tribal motifs in combination with sports elements such as micro-mesh."
MARA HOFFMAN "I call this collection a gang of rainbow warriors. If there were ever a gang that worshipped rainbows, this is what they would wear."
NICOLE MILLER "Spring 2014 is party dressing with an attitude. A bit extravagant yet still feminine and luxe."
KENNETH COLE "Mixing sporty elements in a beautiful, urban way."
BCBGMAXAZRIA "We were inspired by nature and modern art. Contemporary art inspired the choice of vivid colors, while more muted tones glean inspiration from the natural beauty of the world around us."
