Alexa Ray Joel, the daughter of musician Billy Joel and model Christie Brinkley, says it "freaks her out" when people identify her by her famous last name.

Joel showed off her unique style Wednesday at Whitney Port's New York Fashion Week show for her line Whitney Eve in an off-the-shoulder peacock print maxidress and brown hat.

"I want to be known for my own identity and make my own way," she said. "I use it as motivation to push me forward."

Joel is a singer and pianist, but she also worked the Fashion Week circuit as a host for Julib.com, interviewing celebrities and designers and talking trends on camera.

Joel said her mom had some advice to give for entering the fashion industry.

"Don't take any ---- from anybody," she said. "You have to self-protect and self-preserve."

Also at the Whitney Eve show was "Real Housewives of New Jersey" star Caroline Manzo, who has expressed her love for Joel on Twitter in the past. Manzo's son Albie tweeted that he was "mortified" last year when his brother Chris said on the show that if their mother could trade three sheep, property and Albie for Alexa, she would. Joel has also tweeted her support for the Manzo family and their Bravo show.
