  • NuBest debuts Sonya Dakar facial

    Rita Arabova, an aesthetician at

There are facials and then there are FACIALS.  The Sonya Dakar UltraLuxe Age Control facial, new at nuBest Salon and Spa in Manhasset, is the latter.

With the spa’s recent introduction of the complete 30-year-old, Los Angeles-headquartered line of nature-meets-science based products,  well, it’s a major, and excellent slather-fest.

We tried it out recently (trust us, we’ve had a few facials in our time) and found it to be simultaneously relaxing and invigorating and . . .  our skin looked and felt great afterwards.

The  aesthetician, Rita  Arabova, said the staff was trained over the course of a month to get this process down.  That may be in part because it’s complicated -- there are some – yikes – 15-steps.  Here are some highlights:

-A blue mask with seaweed and minerals from the Dead Sea

-Omega 3- oils  (no salmon – just a nice skin saturating lotion)

-Seaweed Liposome Gel (loads of vitamins with frankincense, tangerine and rosewood)

-And our very favorite new skin treatment…snake venom.  Well, actually the product, UltraLuxe 9 Age Control Complex, simulates the tightening effect of a snake’s venom, gently stunning the skin – but – heh-heh – no bite.

The 75-minute treatment encompasses décolleté, neck and hands as well as face and includes massage.  It’s $200.  What a treat.  For an appointment call nuBest at 516-627-9444.

  • Stella McCartney teams with GapKids and BabyGap for holidays

Cool chicks have been fans of Stella McCartney duds for years – we’re talking celeb types who swoon for the designer’s uber-chic vibe.

So it is no surprise that the debut of her kids’ collection for Gap (yup, for your little chickadees – boys and girls from 0- 6 months to 12 years) is causing much hoopla.

It’s already hit the selling floor at select Gap locations including Roosevelt Field (it’s selling “a lot but there’s still stock,” one sales associate told us), and Wednesday, Nov. 4, will debut at Gapkids at the Americana Shopping Center in Manhasset (“People are calling for it a lot.  A lot.” said another associate).

There’s reason for the anticipation and sales:  the 70-piece collection is fabulous and somehow melds a mother’s dream for practical stylishness with kids’ desire for fun and fantasy.

McCartney, who is famously vegetarian, and staunchly eschews leather and fur in her collections, is also the mother of three.   “ For years now I’ve wanted to create a collection for kids,” she said.  “I think (the collection) has a mix of the playful and practical.  There are pieces that are classic and sort of timeless and hopefully very chic, mixed with more playful and a little bit cooler pieces.”

Definitely not too cool for school however.  For boys, McCartney’s mix includes monster and superhero graphic tees with the likes of a navy wool peacoat with concealed hood. There are organic jeans, anoraks made from recycled fabrics and simple baseball tees.

Key pieces for girls include an intarsia leopard print knit, velvet blazer and cable knit sweater dressing (some of it plucked right off McCartneys Fall ’09 runway).  There are skinny jeans and classic flares, but most darling is the girlish tulle tutu or ruffled front smock dress paired with an oversized hoodie sweater or chunky cardigan and colorful high top sneakers.

Word is that McCartney used real kids rather than professional models for her fashion shoot and you can see just how great this stuff will look on your real kids.  Prices go from $14 for a pair of tights to $128 for a naval “Miller” jacket (named after one of her sons).  Get it while it’s hot, because it will be gone, soon.

  • Fashion’s Night Out? Same time next year

The stats from September’s wacky and wonderful Fashion’s Night Out are in and the word is:  success.

So say the powers that created the five-borough multi-faceted, major fashion gig to celebrate fashion, restore consumer confidence and boost the industry’s economy. The event was held the first night of Fashion Week in September.

“Thousands of New Yorkers attended events in all five boroughs supporting the City’s retail and fashion industries,” said Mayor Michael Bloomberg in a statement.

And the organizations that conceived of and backed the promotion – American Vogue, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, NYC & Company – the city’s tourism and marketing arm, and the City of New York – are planning on doing it again on Sept. 9, 2010.

The first time around, some 800 stores participated in the event with celebrity appearances,  gifts with purchases, musical performances, lessons and all around nutty happenings. For example, shoe man Stuart Weitzman, left,  played pingpong with visitors, Oscar de la Renta sang, the Olsen twins bartended in more than one location and there was salsa dancing in the streets.

Lots of fun, but how good for business was it? Some of the evidence is anecdotal. “It was only 15 minutes after the event began and we were getting reports about lines around the block at stores throughout the city,” said Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour.

But there’s factual data too.  An independent study conducted by ShopperTrak estimated a 50 percent increase in retail foot traffic and NYC & Company’s post-event survey of 1,300 consumers reported 75 percent purchased merchandise during Fashion's Night Out.

“It’s sure to an even bigger event in 2010,”  Bloomberg said.

Keep it in mind and if you want to sign up for updates for next year’s very big night out check out fashionsnightout.com.

  • Designer Devi Kroell Goes Mad Ave.

    A display of Devi Kroell's

Five years ago, designer Devi Kroell revved up the shopping muscles of the fashion flock with a sublime python hobo bag.

Today, her empire has greatly expanded with a sleek new home at 717 Madison Ave., where a 2,800 gallery-like space features a gorgeously displayed array of the designer’s bags, as well as shoes, leather accessories and a new ready-to-wear collection.

While the interior of the designer’s eponymous new store is modern, it is not cold but instead inviting and peaceful.

"I wanted to create an airy, secluded space where shoppers could have a serene experience and take in the pieces at their own pace,“ said Kroell.  And indeed her intricate designs, artfully arranged, are the stars in their new digs.

Kroell also has another store in East Hampton but the new flagship is a knock out.   Definitely worth a visit.
