American Eagle Spring 2013 campaign: Models need not apply
American Eagle Outfitters held a giant photo shoot in Manhattan's Times Square Tuesday, but fashion models were nowhere in sight.
The brand's Spring 2013 campaign is all about "real people" showing off their everyday American Eagle looks.
Thousands of fans lined up outside AE’s flagship store in Father Duffy Square to meet Shay Mitchell, star of ABC Family’s "Pretty Little Liars" and enjoy tunes by DJ Connor Cruise, son of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.
After meeting Mitchell, guests had their photos taken by photographer Patrick McCullan. All photos were displayed on the store's “15 Seconds of Fame” 15,000-square-foot LED billboard.
Mitchell is one of 15 faces for American Eagle’s 2012 “Live Your Life” campaign, which features actors, athletes, musicians and students -- no professional models -- wearing their favorite AE jeans. She wore the Skinny Kick jeans with an AE printed tie cami.
“I love the Skinny Kick jean because I do have some curves and some hips and I just love the shape that it gives you,” Mitchell said. “It takes you from day to night and it’s a really comfortable jean.”
The actress said she jumped on the opportunity to be a part of the campaign because she loved how AE wanted to celebrate individuality by featuring different body types and styles.
“It seemed like the most absolute perfect fit,” she said. “They told me they were going to have a surfer, a blogger, an artist . . . and I said that’s awesome because when you go into a store you always see models and you’re like 'that really looks great on her but would that look good on me?' "
Mitchell said she also loved having the opportunity to pick out her own outfits and give input on the shoots. After she told the AE team she loves to visit a local flower market on the weekends, they decided to shoot some photos right there.
“I was like 'oh this is the real deal, it’s not like [shooting] on a set,' ” she said.
If you couldn't make it to Times Square, it's not too late to enter to be a part of the Spring 2013 campaign. Just submit your entry at ae.com/liveyourlife by Aug. 30.
