Sundown has four locations on Long Island, primarily known for ski and snowboarding gear. But the Levittown location turns into a surfers' haven in the summer months.
"The surfing culture has a very deep and rich heritage on Long Island," says manager Richard G. Jenne. "We're lucky that we have a wide variety of shorelines to take advantage of."
Traces of winter gear remain in the store, but towering surfboards ($159-$1,200), skateboards ($79.99-$219), boogie boards, bright snapbacks, wet suits and Tommy Bahama beach chairs have taken over.
For the guys, there are Rip Curl tanks and skater shorts, and for thegirls, colored denim, crochet tops and fringe bikinis. "You really have to go to a surf shop to find a good, authentic sandal," Jenne says, pointing out the store's wide selection of beach-ready shoes from Reef, Rainbow and other top brands.
Sundown buys, sells and offers trade-in options for used boards, and customers can shop used surf gear at bargain prices at their annual Surf Sale and Swap event June 8-9.
