Bibhu Mohapatra’s star has continued to rise as fashion insiders and outsiders say his name with reverence (it’s kind of fun to say in any case, “Bibhu,”) and since one of the highest profile woman in the world wore one of his dresses on national television . . . yep, Michelle Obama.

At his early morning show at the tents at Lincoln Center on Wednesday, Mohapatra was inspired, said notes, by Man Ray’s evocative photographs of his muses. His goal was to look at the 1930s in a new way.

To that end, the collection featured, lean, perfectly tailored silos for day and cocktail and extravagant materials -- organza, satin, alligator, fox. We particularly liked the geometric patterns of the “broken shard” print in the collection -- they were colorful and interesting and had us thinking of stained glass. And there was an elegant grace to Mohapatra’s blouses that were draped and spliced at the shoulder, topping the slimmest skirts.
