Marc by Marc Jacobs gets schoolmarm chic at Fashion Week

In some ways, this season’s Marc by Marc Jacobs line—shown Tuesday afternoon at the New York State Armory—is a younger, fledgling version of the Marc Jacobs collection revealed Monday night.

There are voluminous dresses that puff out from empire waists, similar to the exaggerated hip silhouette in the higher-end line. And there’s a touch of sparkle, courtesy of Lurex sweaters and lamé separates.

But everything feels much more lightweight. Instead of the heavy emphasis on brocade at Marc, knife pleats at Marc by Marc pop up on women’s skirts—a prep look with punch.

And there’s not the same effort at hyper layering. Here, one coat’ll do ya. (We like the look of Dad’s overcoat—a menswear-inspired serge tweed coat—on women, or the Svetlana bouclé puff coat cinched at the waist.)

Cat-eye frames, a “Thumderdome” doctor travel bag, high-tops or motorcycle boots complete the look.

Your schoolmarm alter ego never felt so chic.
