The gals at Marchesa – Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig – went to heaven for inspiration for their ethereal collection by way of an angelic painting entitled, “A Soul Brought to Heaven,” by William Adolphe Bouguereaus. A photograph of the work accompanied the program notes at their glamorous runway show at the Plaza Hotel Wednesday evening.
The wow-factor was off the charts at this swoon-worthy display of dramatic gowns (although the duo featured some shorter frocks and oh, the opening coat -- divine) featuring miles of hand-embroidered lace in mostly bronze, nude, cream and ivory shades. Silhouettes ranged from glued-to-the-curves to blown out – one huge ball gown of feathers swept the feet of the guests.
Though angelic themes dominated, the duo worked some edge into the collection with a series of “blood” colored lace numbers and skeleton body suits that outlined the vertebrae and other bones creating shock effect.
Marchesa is a red carpet staple with stars like Glee’s Lea Michele virtual junkies for the feminine pow the gowns provide. You’ll certainly see this stuff on the red carpet real soon. Heaven can wait.
