Oscar de la Renta: Oscar wild!
Perhaps the last thing you expect to see at an Oscar de la Renta runway is rubberized clothing – latex actually – but it was the first. A red latex tank, with a navy wool blazer and ivory pencil skirt – zoomed out onto de la Renta’s runway (Karlie Kloss wearing it). Youthful, fun (for goodness sakes, the models had neon streaks in their beehives!!) and supremely chic it heralded a beautiful, relevant collection.
There was “scribble” threadwork – one look a white floral and jet jacket over a tweed pencil skirt – that almost looked like graffiti. Graffiti at Oscar? For the ladies who need that certain kind of swanky daywear they'll find it here – a chocolate and ivory silk pant paired with a safari jacket – or perhaps they’ll want to make jaws drop in a shocking pink Persian lamb suit.
Back to the latex – there was more, in emerald green, yellow and shocking pink (ruffled even) this worn with a matching tweed pencil skirt.
Toward the end of the show came some of the high-voltage, uber-luxe evening looks you expect from de la Renta and some you didn’t. A shocking pink ostrich over embroidered peplum bustier over light pink silk faille wide cocktail shorts – whaaaat? An aquamarine silk organza dress with light pale pink feather and silver bullion cherry blossom embroidery was more conventionally but equally divine. A silver bead and lame tunic over matching pants read like molten silver -- slim and smashing.
We watched this show from an unusual vantage point -- getting a glimpse of the models as they poised themselves to hit the runway. Up close, one look was even more stunning than the next. And de la Renta was right there -- tweaking, though the collection needed little -- to the very last minute.
In all, a glamorous, witty show from a designer who keeps on bringing it.
