Red-hot start to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week
It was all about being in the red – a good thing – as Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week revved up on Wednesday night at The Heart Truth’s Red Dress Collection fashion show at the Hammerstein Ballroom. Here, celebs, clad, natch, in red designer dresses worked the runway for a wildly appreciative crowd to create awareness about women’s heart health.
Models included “The Millionaire Matchmaker” Patti Stanger looking all the loooove goddess in a structured Marc Bouwer gown, actress Rose McGowan, whose sassy catwalk antics complemented her ethereal Donna Karan, and L.I.’s own age-defying Christie Brinkley in Pamella Roland. Brinkley tossed off a slight wardrobe malfunction, proving that once a supermodel, always a supermodel.
Chaka Kahn looked downright regal in a Chris March confection – he of reality show fame – while Glamour magazine’s editor in chief Cindi Leivie was demure in her crimson, short Jason Wu, save for her spikey, hip ‘do. Speaking of which, Gloria Estefan, in a swanky Narciso Rodriguez, wore her hair in a dramatic beehive – very cool.
Minka Kelly was red-hot in a languid, sequin Diane von Furstenberg number, though Derek Jeter did not seem to be around to appreciate it. Linda Evans took to the runway in a shirred Tadashi Shoji frock with the theme from “Dynasty” playing in the background, and Jenna Elfman’s strapless, shiny Alberta Ferretti gown was knock-out.
But if the night was supposed to be all about heart – and it was – the moment was stolen by swim mom Debbie Phelps, in Adrienne Pappell, who stopped short on the runway to kiss her boy Michael (yup, that Michael, as in the 14-time Olympic gold medalist). “She did a good job, a really good job,” said Phelps, who traded his swimsuit for a smart business suit and tie.
This is the 10th anniversary of the extravaganza, which is sponsored by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute to help spread the word about preventing heart disease, the No. 1 killer of women. What a great way to kick-off Fashion Week.
