Trina Turk makes her New York Fashion Week debut
Los Angeles-based designer Trina Turk is a California girl through and through, but this February she decided to take on New York Fashion Week for the first time in the 17 years since she started her brand.
"It's really exciting," Turk told Newsday. "We had a great team working on this show and it all went very smoothly. I'm very happy with the way our lovely girls look."
The Sunday afternoon presentation at Lincoln Center included menswear-inspired pieces layered with a mixture of textures and colors including deep greens, purples, russet and navy blue. Vintage hats topped off the strong sillhouettes.
"Our inspiration was California modern," Turk said. "We were inspired by the landscape and the architecture and also the multicultural mix of Southern California."
The models were chosen with this idea of diversity in mind.
"I wanted to play with color on many levels," she said, "like the colors of the clothes, the colors of the skin tones . . . I think the mix is very beautiful."
Turk may not be a regular at New York Fashion Week, but she does have boutiques in Manhattan and East Hampton.
"Two of the things we're known for are print and color," Turk said. "There's an optimism about color that appeals to people no matter where they are."
Her collaboration with Banana Republic was a hit in the Hamptons last summer, but Turk has a different kind of partnership on the horizon.
"We're designing the outdoor patio area for Malibu Barbie's dream house," she said. "It's like this fantasy poolside--cabanas, Chaise Lounges-- at her Malibu dream house."
