Ralph Lauren had timeless heroines who were independent and bold on his mind at his Friday morning downtown show on the last day of New York Fashion week.
His runway unfolded like a movie about some rebellious beauty during the Russian Revolution trapped at a seaside village where she dressed in black nautical garb – shapely coats, a crested officer’s jacket, sailor pants, breeches, fisherman’s...Read more »
Though he started as a fur man, Gilles Mendel’s elegant eveningwear has become a staple on the red carpet, and after his show at the tents at Lincoln Center Wednesday afternoon, fashion pundits were predicting that looks from this collection will appear on the red carpet at the Academy Awards. A body conscious blue silk crepe asymmetrical draped gown had everything a star could ever need to make...Read more »
Bibhu Mohapatra’s star has continued to rise as fashion insiders and outsiders say his name with reverence (it’s kind of fun to say in any case, “Bibhu,”) and since one of the highest profile woman in the world wore one of his dresses on national television . . . yep, Michelle Obama.
At his early morning show at the tents at Lincoln Center on Wednesday, Mohapatra was inspired, said notes,...Read more »
Designers Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig put out a poetic collection of evening wear on a runway at the New York Public Library on Wednesday night. Inspired, said notes, by a 17th century equestrian portrait by Francisco de Goya.
It was elaborate ornate and very romantic. There were billowing gauze shirts overlaying intricate threadwork. Dramatic big capes and duchess satin...Read more »
You expect Nanette Lepore to have some kind of boho-vintagey vibe going on at her shows, but on Wednesday at the tents she took a more futuristic stance: she was inspired by the Mars Rover.
We loved the iridescent textured top shown beneath a black wool coat and set off by a Space Age hologram handbag and shoes. And high tech jackets and coats that looked like leather were actually coated...Read more »
The sun hadn't yet set on Manhattan when designer Michelle Smith showed her Milly Fall 2013 line at Lincoln Center on Wednesday afternoon, but the urban landscape at night is what inspired her.
Smith translated the bright lights, shadows of skyscrapers and luminescent billboards into metallic black and charcoal dresses, hologram skirts, pullovers and clutches that lit up the runway in shiny...Read more »
Urban athleticism mixed with Park Avenue polish -- that’s what Michael Kors was thinking for Fall 2013, which he was designing during superstorm Sandy. And with homes in downtown Manhattan and on Long Island, this seemed to put him in a survivalist mode.
So boom! His runway opened with some seriously high-voltage colors such as taxi yellow, safety vest orange and cobalt, and plenty of luxed-up...Read more »
The folks at Clover Canyon may design, cut and sew their clothes in sunny California, but the new brand has Russia on the brain for fall.
Called “Winter Palace,” the line takes inspiration from the land of Baryshnikov and Tolstoy, using prints derived from photos of everything from grand architecture to dramatic vistas, from the Siberian plains to the stage of the Ballets Russes. The ornate...Read more »
You could tell Anna Sui was cooking up something très, très Francais from the moment you stepped inside the tent and took your seat, serenaded by a series of ‘60s (and thereabouts) French pop songs. Another tip-off -- her program, entitled “Nouvelle Vague” (or New Wave).
Ahhhh, oui, oui, but of course -- La Sui, she is paying homage to the French New Wave, a group of maverick French...Read more »
Jeremy Scott sure knows how to put on a show -- the roar of applause was deafening after he unleashed a jet-fueled, neon-lit, sugar-rush collection inspired by the raucous, take-no-prisoners punk rock / New Wave movements, and sure to please all you club-hopping fashionistas and downtown dudes out there.
It was like time traveling back to 1979, with the B-52s anthem “Rock Lobster” blasting...Read more »
