The inspiration: The genial, energetic designer Alexander Wang has in past seasons given hints of what’s on his mind with his invites. This one—a slab of black rubber—foreshadowed a line that’s all about…the sneaker.
The vibe: Sporty, sporty, sporty. Not that the models wore sneakers, mind you—they were perched atop spike heels. But the clothes themselves...Read more »
Rumor had it that HBO “Girls” stars Zosia Mamet and Lena Dunham dyed their hair a stark, whitish blonde at the same time. “We didn’t do it together,” said Mamet, who screeched into the Rebecca Minkoff show Friday, seconds before it started, blustering (with a few choice expletives) about the traffic.“I did it about a week and a half ago,” she said, while Dunham debuted the ’do much earlier. As for...Read more »
She may be only 14, but Willow Shields knows how to strike a pose. “The Hunger Games” star (she plays little sister Primrose to Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss), turned up at Peter Som on Friday morning -- her first fashion show. Happily mugging for the paparazzi, hands on hips, Shields said: “I learned how to pose on the red carpet.”
Wearing Som’s dark, tailored dress with appliqued flowers,...Read more »
The inspiration: Charlotte Rampling—delectable and devastatingly beautiful English actress (catch her in “Georgy Girl,” Woody Allen’s “Stardust Memories,” and Sidney Lumet’s “The Verdict “ with Paul Newman).
The vibe: Whispers of the 1970s, in the swoosh of a flowing midi-length silk dress, a slit-high olive suede skirt, or slouchy silk trousers. But it’s just...Read more »
Alysia Reiner, who plays the now disgraced corrupt assistant warden on Netflix hit, “Orange is the New Black,” turned out at the early AM Nicholas K -- the first official show of New Fashion Week -- wearing a vintage striped Norma Kamali jumpsuit.
How is it playing one of TV’s most despised villainesses? “I am incredibly blessed to be a woman people love to hate,” she said laughing....Read more »
Blonde-spotting may well become an official sport when New York Fashion Week gets going on Thursday.
Fashion-followers all over town are hoping to catch a glimpse of Donatella Versace, who will show her Versus Versace collection -- new to the show roster -- on Sunday night. Gwen Stefani is back to present her L.A.M.B. collection followed by cocktails early Saturday evening. And while we're...Read more »
The inspiration: The Depression-era song “Happy Days Are Here Again” may not have been inspiration per se, but it certainly was a strong influence — though it was not the traditional peppy version that Marc Jacobs played as the models strutted the runway. It wasn’t Barbara Streisand’s ironic, slower-paced version — not even the “Glee” duets take. Instead, an hypnotic voice recited the lyrics over...Read more »
The inspiration: The now-infamous polar vortex must’ve been on the brain of Calvin Klein designer Francisco Costa. His parade of plush wool and mohair dresses and coats is clearly designed to warm, of course, but also to comfort and soothe.
The vibe: Serene. This is, after all, a Calvin Klein show.
The lust-o-meter: The palette was fairly standard for this brand — primarily black and...Read more »
The inspiration: It wasn’t so much inspiration as news that fueled Ralph Lauren’s runway show. Make that shows, plural, as in two back-to-back, one of his luxe line (Ralph Lauren Collection), and the other his first-ever Polo diffusion line for women.
The vibe: Exciting, given that there's a whole new Ralph line and vision to check out. Debuts like that don’t come around very often.
The...Read more »
Inspiration: Hotness and yeah more hotness. Yep, Johnson’s invitation featured a red hot water bottle with a message that blared, “It’s cold outside. Betsey’s hot.” Likewise, her runway program, edged in flame graphics, showed a red burner on a stove and touted the message once again: “Betsey’s Hot.” Her concept? Rihanna meets "American Hustle," and Johnson...Read more »
