Tory Burch presented her elegant, downright pretty collection for Fall 2013 in a swanky ballroom lit by crystal chandeliers at the Pierre Hotel on Fifth Avenue.
Inspired by the rich textures of Gustav Klimt’s portraits and the Art Nouveau movement, Burch’s looks were uber-embellished and classy, yet still maintained an air of whimsy.
Beetle prints turned out on blouses and turtlenecks...Read more »
The Marc by Marc Jacobs line, especially popular with the older teen and 20-something demo, is often chock-full of campus-ready gear and preppy-with-a-twist collegiate looks. For fall, the pendulum seems to be swinging in the opposite direction, with a line that seems focused on an après school wardrobe. Yikes -- these gals have had to get jobs, so they’re going to need more than that one...Read more »
Phillip Lim is known to explore themes in his collections -- like “duality,” for instance, or a pastime like “kiting.” But this season the theme seems obscure, something to do with biker chicks, clearly, given all that leather.
The first look down the runway held much promise -- a pink, quilted coat worn atop a taupe sweater, light blue button-down and caramel-colored leather miniskirt...Read more »
Donna Karan’s models had black, smudged eyes and sleek, high, swingy ponytails wrapped tightly at the base, creating a contradictory canvas that was simultaneously primitive and sophisticated.
Her stretch jersey-centric collection sent out that very same vibe. And if you give Karan jersey to work with, well she can do practically anything.
So, this time around, Karan went savage glam...Read more »
Supermodel Karlie Kloss somehow managed to open Carolina Herrera’s Monday morning show after appearing at the Grammys the night before. In a blush and cream gown in a geometric pattern with a slim, black tie at the neck, Kloss was flawless, and resembled, more than a little, a 1940s beauty.
And that’s what Herrera seemed to have on her mind for Fall 2013... old-time glam. Slim, luxurious silhouettes,...Read more »
Busy, busy boy that Prabal Gurung. Last Thursday, there was the huge bash for his new line at Target, then on Saturday, his downtown uber-luxe runway show was the hot ticket. On Monday, at the tents, he presented his ICB collection, a contemporarily priced line of savvy city girl clothes that really hit the mark.
So how tired was he? “It hasn’t hit me yet,” said Gurung, looking fresh as a...Read more »
Tommy Hilfiger’s show at the Park Avenue Armory on Sunday must have achieved a new record -- for longest runway. Ever. It was like an airstrip, stretching out for what seemed like miles.
But then, Hilfiger is an old hand at injecting some theatrical flair into what is, at heart, very traditional clothing. For fall, he borrowed heavily from menswear (not so surprising) and some mod elements...Read more »
For all the chatter about Zac Posen having once been the “enfant terrible” of fashion -- ohhh, his meteoric rise and, alas, mystifying fall (hey, the economy hit a lot of designers hard) -- Posen in many ways has a strong, traditionalist streak. Which may be why he’s managed to not completely go under, but eke it out season after season. Indeed, his dresses seem to be popping up on the red carpet...Read more »
Vivienne Tam celebrated the Chinese New Year at her Sunday night show with a Pop Art- and punk-inspired collection of graphic prints in bold colors -- black, red, white.
Take the first look, which spoke volumes of what was to come. The model wore a black jacket with leather sleeves and a “Pop Culture Obama” print -- that’s right, the president’s face multiplied many times over, as if in a...Read more »
Let’s start with the finish. After a decade of making her finale walk with a creative director by her side, Diane von Furstenberg took to the runway alone. She wasn’t a bit shy, mouthing the words; “I’m everywoman, oh, oh, oh,” to the blasting disco anthem.
It said a lot about the collection called “Glam Rock,” which more than referenced the '70s high life (and we mean high) intertwining a...Read more »
