Inspiration: Sunshine and the blue waters of the French Riviera 1950s style (think Brigitte Bardot) inspired von Furstenberg’s collection that included bold checks, vibrant colors and graphic patterns ...sometimes all in one look.
The vibe: Flirty, upbeat, exuberant … with Barry White crooning in the background, the celebrity-packed house was in for a delightful ride on a runway that...Read more »
Model and Long Islander Carol Alt was a front-row guest at the Dennis Basso show, but she wasn’t just watching — she was shooting a movie with her crew in the photo pit. The film, called “Stealing Chanel,” is about the ex-wife of a Russian oligarch, who loves expensive clothes and gets someone to steal them for her, Alt said.As some of Basso’s most expensive clothes glided by on the runway, Alt...Read more »
You could hear a pin drop at Dennis Basso’s Monday afternoon runway show, as the designer asked for a moment of silence for his “dear friend” Joan Rivers, who was always a fixture at his fashion shows.
Before the show started, Basso addressed the audience, saying that Rivers “brought laughter and happiness to all of our lives.”
In other Rivers-related fashion news, the E! Entertainment...Read more »
Uzo Aduba, who plays Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren on the Netflix hit “Orange Is the New Black,” sat front and center at Christian Siriano’s show, dressed in anything but prison garb -- a body-skimming, pastel number. Her role as the trigger-tempered inmate “takes a lot of energy,” she said. “Suzanne is a heavy load, but one I’m not afraid to lift. I don’t hold anything back.”
The Emmy-winning...Read more »
It was like mother, like daughter backstage at Christian Siriano on Saturday.
Jada Pinkett-Smith and her mother, Adrienne Banfield-Jones, held court, both turned out in Siriano designs. They were there “to support Christian,” said Banfield-Jones. The designer and Pinkett-Smith were both born and raised in Maryland and went to the same school (Baltimore School for the Arts).

The inspiration: “Rosemary’s Baby,” from gingham-sweet beginnings to a flesh-baring leather fate. (The film’s lullaby, sung by Mia Farrow, made for a haunting soundtrack.) There’s also some “Barry Lyndon” influence (the vivid Stanley Kubrick period drama) thrown in for good measure. (Hey, designer Joseph Altuzarra has a lot of titles on his Netflix queue.)
The vibe: ...Read more »
The inspiration: The genial, energetic designer Alexander Wang has in past seasons given hints of what’s on his mind with his invites. This one—a slab of black rubber—foreshadowed a line that’s all about…the sneaker.
The vibe: Sporty, sporty, sporty. Not that the models wore sneakers, mind you—they were perched atop spike heels. But the clothes themselves...Read more »
Rumor had it that HBO “Girls” stars Zosia Mamet and Lena Dunham dyed their hair a stark, whitish blonde at the same time. “We didn’t do it together,” said Mamet, who screeched into the Rebecca Minkoff show Friday, seconds before it started, blustering (with a few choice expletives) about the traffic.“I did it about a week and a half ago,” she said, while Dunham debuted the ’do much earlier. As for...Read more »
She may be only 14, but Willow Shields knows how to strike a pose. “The Hunger Games” star (she plays little sister Primrose to Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss), turned up at Peter Som on Friday morning -- her first fashion show. Happily mugging for the paparazzi, hands on hips, Shields said: “I learned how to pose on the red carpet.”
Wearing Som’s dark, tailored dress with appliqued flowers,...Read more »
The inspiration: Charlotte Rampling—delectable and devastatingly beautiful English actress (catch her in “Georgy Girl,” Woody Allen’s “Stardust Memories,” and Sidney Lumet’s “The Verdict “ with Paul Newman).
The vibe: Whispers of the 1970s, in the swoosh of a flowing midi-length silk dress, a slit-high olive suede skirt, or slouchy silk trousers. But it’s just...Read more »
