If you’re like Michelle Obama—a sucker for a good print—then you’ll love slipping into many of the pieces in the 3.1 Phillip Lim spring collection. He had some grand themes on his mind, namely a “survey of raw landscapes,” as he wrote in his program notes, and an exploration of brutal yet “beautifully charged” ecosystems. Okay. What that translates into is a selection of exceedingly clever and original...Read more »
Tommy Hilfiger went “Westcoasting” at Pier 94 on the Westside Highway on Monday afternoon. And some fashion-types (we’re talking to you, impossibly high stiletto wearers) had a tough time navigating his show. Hilfiger’s runway was a slatted boardwalk topping what must have been a ton of sand including actual dunes with sea grass sprouting out of them.
If you didn’t get the gist of the show...Read more »
The Kinetic Art movement and Venezuelan artists Carlos Cruz-Diez and Jesus Rafael Soto were the inspiration for Carolina Herrera’s morning show at the tents on Monday.
Herrera’s collection was luxe and polished but definitely not stodgy. Here, layered fabrics emblazoned with optical prints -- lines and striping that tricked the eye -- had added dimension in swirling chiffon and organza. They...Read more »
“Long Island is so beautiful. It’s like living in the woods,” said Mathieu Mirano, backstage at his Lincoln Center early morning presentation Monday. A Huntington native, Mirano, 22, was presenting his fourth New York Fashion Week show. While he said that Long Island didn’t directly affect his aesthetic, his mother, Pascale, did. “My mom is a quilter. She had all these pieces of material and I grew...Read more »
Forget gold and silver -- Ralph Rucci is making a case for bronze this spring, with a series of dresses and jackets that may just win you over.
Let’s go straight to one of our faves -- a harness jersey dress, with skinny straps and horizontal slits cut right at the (low) neckline. It floated delicately as the model walked, hugging the figure in all the right places. And then there was...Read more »
Nobody does romance like Zac Posen -- it’s part of the brand’s DNA, and perhaps what keeps his customers coming back, checking him out, despite a few bumpy seasons when the economy tumbled and we feared maybe he had, too. But the former infant terrible seemed to show a mature, refined side with this spring collection of pale florals, bias-cut satin gowns and sculpted, ruffled skirts.
Peach,...Read more »
An ode to modern Shanghai -- Vivienne Tam’s spring line is inspired by China’s most pulsating, vibrant metropolis, and it’s evident in a lot of the looks she sent down the runway. There’s the skyline patterns on a crewneck sweater, and a lot of gritty black and white prints, and yet surprisingly this may be one of Vivienne Tam’s softest collections in years.
The China-born designer usually...Read more »
“Be your own oasis … an unexpected source of renewal, serenity and beauty,” read the intro to Diane von Furstenberg’s notes at her Sunday afternoon show at Lincoln Center. Suffice it to say, “serenity” was not in the mix (not that this was a bad thing).
Von Furstenberg’s show was a happy, rollicking affair -- celebs lining the front row bopping in their seats to this summer’s biggest pop hits....Read more »
Tracy Reese’s fashion show invite included a video clip of Desi Arnaz as Ricky Ricardo playing “Babalu.” And the guys with the maracas and conga drums on the runway, along with the bags of plantain chips on the seats, well, you got a good idea that Reese had something Cuban up her pretty sleeve.
Indeed her optimistic, all-out fun Cuban-inspired collection virtually undulated with energy. Models,...Read more »
It’s hard to believe that the Donna Karan’s DKNY line has been around for 25 years -- it seems like only yesterday that the feisty brand was born. For her show on Sunday afternoon, Karan made one thing perfectly clear: Age has done nothing to dampen the spirits of the exuberant brand, which remains as relevant as ever.
Here boy-meets-girl repeatedly: boyfriend jackets, stretched white shirtdresses,...Read more »
