Narciso Rodriguez -- diagonally speaking

It’s the little things that grab your attention at a Narciso Rodriguez show. A diagonal seam. A sliver of skin. The lack of a lapel.

Each had their place in his spring collection, which he showed Tuesday night at an event space in Manhattan’s far West Side. The seaming popped up on sleek crepe dresses, where a few vertical seams were offset by one headed diagonally. Sometimes, the seam extended...

French designer Sophie Theallet embraces color, prints and sensuality --  if you’ve seen her collections before, you know that going in. And this season she didn’t disappoint.

A red Henley top with red-print skirt, a peach and turquoise pleated number, and a mint green and brown print dress (hard to say what the print was exactly -- an abstract, leafy pattern, it seemed, while in motion...

Marc by Marc Jacobs' satin dolls and current events

Marc Jacobs has free speech on the brain -- and in the DJ booth -- which explains his choice of music at his Marc by Marc Jacobs show on Tuesday at Pier 57, along the Hudson River. His models marched to the strains of “WWPRD,” (short for “What Would Pussy Riot Do?”), a just-released anthem from Jeffrey Lewis, who recites the lyrics, “What is this -- the Middle Ages? Let those women out of those...

Naeem Khan: Glitter and glam and a wedding gown, too, at NYFW

(Credit: Getty Images)

The opening looks at Naeem Khan’s show at Lincoln Center Tuesday afternoon were folkloric embroideries inspired by painted Mexican ceramics and tiles. There was an embroidered taffeta trapeze mini dress, a peasant blouse with a gathered skirt and of course, a graphic caftan, which is a signature in Khan’s shows.

We’ve seen beauties like this from Khan before, but not so the next grouping of...

Tom Mora, head of women’s design at J. Crew, had parallel beaches on his mind as inspiration for the brand’s presentation, held at Lincoln Center Tuesday morning.

One was set in California, and all about “the strength of surfers and the casual lifestyle they lead wearing floral prints, modern fabrics and bold colors,” Mora said in program notes. The second focused on European beach culture...

On her pool blue runway, designer Tory Burch held a garden party of sorts in the David Koch Theatre at Lincoln Center inspired by the French Rivera in late 1960s and Romy Schneider’s character in “La Piscine.”

Botanical and Queen Anne’s lace embroidery and prints in fresh shades of coral and apple green mixed with crisp, white lattice cutouts, some in leather.

A humble burlap linen coat...

On a trip to India, Donna Karan found a scarf that inspired her spring 2014 collection.  WHile the lineup boasted Karan's signature urban flair there was more than a  touch of the exotic.

Karan’s earthy angels donned sometimes-translucent day-to-night stretch dresses, some with graphic hand blocking that skimmed bodies like halos, but simmered with sensuality.

For Karan, who...

Kaufmanfranco's bandaged beauties

Kaufmanfranco designers Ken Kaufman and Isaac Franco have had the great fortune of being loooooved by the ladies of Hollywood—Jennifer Aniston, most prominently, not to mention any of the celebs—including Jane Krakowski, Olivia Palermo, Katie Cassidy and Ashley Greene—sitting front row at KF’s runway show Monday night.

It’s easy to see why—there were plenty of riveting, red carpet gowns on...

3.1 Phillip Lim--style with a geology lesson

If you’re like Michelle Obama—a sucker for a good print—then you’ll love slipping into many of the pieces in the 3.1 Phillip Lim spring collection. He had some grand themes on his mind, namely a “survey of raw landscapes,” as he wrote in his program notes, and an exploration of brutal yet “beautifully charged” ecosystems. Okay. What that translates into is a selection of exceedingly clever and original...

Tommy Hilfiger brings the boardwalk to New York Fashion Week

A model walks the runway at the Tommy

(Credit: Getty Images)

Tommy Hilfiger went “Westcoasting” at Pier 94 on the Westside Highway on Monday afternoon. And some fashion-types (we’re talking to you, impossibly high stiletto wearers) had a tough time navigating his show. Hilfiger’s runway was a slatted boardwalk topping what must have been a ton of sand including actual dunes with sea grass sprouting out of them.

If you didn’t get the gist of the show...
