Calvin Klein creative director Francisco Costa celebrated his 10th year at the helm of the fabled house on Thursday in a vast, new space on Varick Street. And while the name of the company may be Calvin Klein, this was definitely Costa’s moment.
“After a decade with the brand, I feel I have respected the legacy of the house, while pushing it forward and I am invigorated by what lies a head,”...Read more »
The Marc Jacobs runway show -- the finale of New York Fashion Week -- was as climatic as it was climactic. Climatic, as in pouring rain outside the New York State Armory, where Jacobs holds his show, and sweltering inside. Jacobs can’t control the rain (we don’t THINK) but we weren’t sure if the heat inside was a technical fluke or part of the ambience, given that he’d transformed the space into...Read more »
“I wonder where Ralph will take us this season,” queried one fashion friend pre-Ralph Lauren show. After all, over the past few seasons Lauren has journeyed to China, Spain and Russia for inspiration. At his Thursday morning show on the last day of New York Fashion Week, Lauren took a quick hop across the pond: London, England, circa 1960 and oh what a trip.
Up first: Models in goggle sunglasses,...Read more »
Talk about a tough year -- make that year and a half -- for Betsey Johnson, the queen of outrageous fashion (and fashion shows): Her fashion label went bankrupt last year, but she made a comeback this year, releasing a lower-priced line of dresses and accessories. She also starred with her daughter, Lulu, in a reality show on the Style Network. Now, two days before her latest fashion show, it was...Read more »
Anna Sui’s unique brand of chock-a-block patterns and offbeat inspiration are what keep her fans happy, and they should be pretty pleased with this spring collection, which had a distinctly haute hippie vibe: crocheted caftans, fringe, floral chiffon. We later heard she had the pre-Raphaelites on the brain, romantic artists of the 19th century who loved color and detail almost as much, it would...Read more »
It isn’t often that a major fashion label for the uber-wealthy (and really uber) attempts a major change-up -- you don’t want to throw off the Upper East Side set -- but J. Mendel designer Gilles Mendel decided to rock his fashion boat a bit. His collection is full of luxe separates: fur vests, tulle skirts, crepe tees.
No gowns. Well, OK, no need to get the defibrillator. There were a few,...Read more »
Designers have their niches. Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig own theirs: luxurious, ornate gowns for princess brides and red-carpet sirens.
Their show at New York Public Library, in a space with heavy drapery, gold chairs and plush white carpet, featured 27 gowns and dresses that were a feast for the eye and the imagination.
The duo traveled to different decades to create each piece....Read more »
You can’t blame Rachel Zoe for the fact that the air-conditioning failed in her venue at the tents at Lincoln Center on one of the hottest days of the year. It was an oven. But despite the heat, the show was sassy, smart and very cool. We watched Zoe-obsessed gals in the audience ogling — with lust almost — the baggy ripped up denim shorts and boyfriend jeans, the adorable itsy, bitsy...Read more »
It was a beautiful showing from designer Bibhu Mohapatra, who was inspired by the theories of human movement, expression and dance. The designer, who worked as an assistant to Halston and as J. Mendel’s design director for nine years, has won numerous fashion honors and awards and continues to evolve in an exciting way.
A restful palette of coral, ivory, stone, saffron, sage and blush got...Read more »
The boys at Badgley Mischka had a story to tell about a lady circa 1920-ish. She was very fashionable and took a journey on a yacht wearing tweed pieces – a fitted trumpet skirt with a flared hem and a fit-like-a-glove sheath. She'd packed a sporty short set, an ethereal white maxi dress, a polka dot bra and pant ensemble, and a cloche hat or two.
So what happens? So as not to draw it out…...Read more »
