Carmen Marc Valvo: Dive right in

Ready to take the dive? Carmen Marc Valvo’s scuba-inspired collection was a new twist from this seasoned hand. Models in two-tone wigs set the stage for this predominantly black and white runway that exuded a bit of aggression and lots of pow.

Sexy, body con cocktail frocks — some pairing athletic mesh and black leather — were just shy of edgy. A couple of swimsuits — one a scuba-style maillot...

Peter Som: Surf's up

A graphic blue wave print set the stage, or surf, as it were, for Peter Som’s joyous, surf-inspired romp on Friday morning. Models in chic flat oxfords wore retro-style bathing suits and smart mixed-media jackets of snakeskin, raffia and neoprene.

Notable were the crop tops. Everything from a bralette (expected) to a pale-blue button-down chambray were cut to expose the midriff. (Note to self:...

Tadashi Shoji: Sugar High

Backstage at Tadashi Shoji, the designer held court preshow dressed in a kooky mix of colors: a periwinkle blue cardigan, a green and white striped button down shirt and …. pale pink pants. It was a visual statement. Which is exactly what Shoji said he was trying to make with his frothy collection of evening looks.

“It’s about sweet liberation,” he said. “Not women’s liberation. Women are...

Richard Chai Love: The new math

Math can be hard, but Richard Chai aced it with his savvy sense of geometry. Here shapes and prints read soft and fluid and wholly hip.

There were shadow stripes, floral and plaid combos and a swervy geo print that encased the form but did not overwhelm. Chai wasn’t shy in the color department either – saturated shades of poppy, grenadine, cobalt and aqua amped up navy, black and white.

Max Azria’s clever collection took divergent paths. Go one-way and you get crisp, chic and yes, a touch practical -- hail to that khaki cotton sleeveless trench, a guaranteed go-to next season. Then, for a little romance, there were the fanciful frocks emblazoned with vivid flowers … blooming beautiful.

An off-white snake embossed leather jacket was equal parts power and pretty, blush colored...

Nicholas K offers a pow and a wow on the runway

We expect an urban “Apocalypse Now” moment from Nicholas K, but this season the design duo -- Nicholas and Christopher Kunz -- went the other way with an easier, less aggressive Apache-inspired sportswear collection. Feathers in the models’ messily braided hair, along with moccasin booties, underscored this.

The vibe overall was organic and easy -- drapey ensembles in black, white and earth...

Statement coats with strong defined cuts and big, solid gold buckles gave more than a hint about what Francisco Costa was thinking for fall 2013: Military.

After his show on Thursday afternoon, Costa said he was inspired by the Andrei Tarkovsky 1962 Russian movie, “Ivan’s Childhood,” about one boy’s traumatic journey through World War II. Of the collection he said, “It’s male-female and very...

Ralph Lauren had timeless heroines who were independent and bold on his mind at his Friday morning downtown show on the last day of New York Fashion week.

His runway unfolded like a movie about some rebellious beauty during the Russian Revolution trapped at a seaside village where she dressed in black nautical garb – shapely coats, a crested officer’s jacket, sailor pants, breeches, fisherman’s...
