Tory Burch: American prep remix

At the Tory Burch Spring 2013 show, there

Tory Burch says her muse is a stylish magpie who picks special pieces while traveling around the world and mixes them with classic sportswear.

In the first part of her show at Avery Fisher Hall, this translated to big, graphic wheat prints in mustard and brown backed by white shown on dresses, shorts and shirts. Somebody ate their Wheaties …even the models’ hair had wheat-stalk like hair extensions. Next up, the perfect summer dress in a pale yellow, honeycomb pattern and a crochet fringed raffia skirt would do double duty as casual and dressy, as would many of her looks here.

There were crisp tie-dye pieces — gorgeous — one-of-a-kind, hand-dyed fabrics made exclusively for Burch by artisans from the Kindia region of Guinea.

The show moved on to quirky combos and garments with embellishment, sparkle, applique and chunky beading — some of it was primitive-looking; other bits, swanky. Burch used  stones and beads to amp up simple things — a cotton shirt boasted a bib of beads — and, for the finale, a sparkly crepe polo dress.
