Marc Jacobs Fall 2014: Happy days are (reportedly) here again

A model walks the runway at the Marc

(Credit: Getty Images / Neilson Barnard)

The inspiration: The Depression-era song “Happy Days Are Here Again” may not have been inspiration per se, but it certainly was a strong influence — though it was not the traditional peppy version that Marc Jacobs played as the models strutted the runway. It wasn’t Barbara Streisand’s ironic, slower-paced version — not even the “Glee” duets take. Instead, an hypnotic voice recited the lyrics over...

Calvin Klein Fall 2014: Mo' better mohair

A model walks the runway at the Calvin

(Credit: Getty Images / Neilson Barnard)

The inspiration: The now-infamous polar vortex must’ve been on the brain of Calvin Klein designer Francisco Costa. His parade of plush wool and mohair dresses and coats is clearly designed to warm, of course, but also to comfort and soothe.

The vibe: Serene. This is, after all, a Calvin Klein show.

The lust-o-meter: The palette was fairly standard for this brand — primarily black and...

Ralph Lauren Fall 2014: Here comes a whole new line

A model walks the runway at the Ralph

(Credit: Getty Images / Neilson Barnard)

The inspiration: It wasn’t so much inspiration as news that fueled Ralph Lauren’s runway show. Make that shows, plural, as in two back-to-back, one of his luxe line (Ralph Lauren Collection), and the other his first-ever Polo diffusion line for women.

The vibe:  Exciting, given that there's a whole new Ralph line and vision to check out. Debuts like that don’t come around very often.

Anna Sui Fall 2014: Bobbed and bubbly

The inspiration: Given the old-timey jazz music, and the models’ plastered-down bobs, it seems clear that Anna Sui was preoccupied with the 1920s, whether in Hong Kong, Shanghai or even the Chinatown neighborhoods of Los Angeles or San Francisco

The vibe:  Eclectic, sassy, maybe even a little dangerous, with a mix of patterns that's busy-busy-busy-busy-busy-busy-busy-busy.

Clover Canyon Fall 2014: Celtic enchantment

Robes are an intriguing alternative to a jacket

(Credit: Getty Images / Jemal Countess)

The inspiration: In a word—Ireland.  Clover Canyon's program notes featured a poem by William Butler Yeats (“Faeries, come take me out of this dull world / For I would ride with you upon the wind…”) and praised the greenest of greens, the country spires and the stouthearted spirit of the Irish. No wonder the line is called Celtic Enchantment.

The vibe:  Electric. This...

Vera Wang Fall 2014: Dark dames

(Credit: Getty Images / Neilson Barnard)

The inspiration: “Dark romance … a hint of mystery … easy allure.” These were the succinct phrases Vera Wang used in her program notes to describe her new collection. We might also add “girlish goth” to the mix.

The vibe: Dark and mysterious. Wang offered a collection for the gal who likes to speak her mind — we loved the scarab sweater with the message "U bug me" — yet still flaunt her feminine...
