Inspiration: Well, of course DKNY is all about celebrating the city, but for Fall 2014 Donna Karan added something real into the mix, as in real people. To illustrate the diversity of the city, regular folks (though beautiful, interesting ones), walked her runway intermingled with model types. There was a tattoo artist, a musician and even a biologist who stalked the catwalk (and stalk they...Read more »
Inspiration: The kingdom of Mustang, obscure, remote, an exotic Himalayan territory that was closed to the world until 1991.
The vibe: Somber and serene, gigantic brass gongs were centered on the cement runway with models taking a loooooong walk around, demonstrating how beautifully the clothes moved. This, compared to Gurung’s spectacle last season – cartoony, candy-colored...Read more »
The inspiration: Light, heat and the transformative nature of clothing seemed on the brain. And Alexander Wang's invitation to the fashion show was our first clue. The rectangular card was black on front, with a seat assignment printed on back…along with a message in teeny print: “Touch to reveal front.” Press your hand down on the front of the card and writing materialized out...Read more »
The inspiration: Joseph Altuzarra wants to explore notions of luxury, craftsmanship and most notably—color. “It is the first time that color is such a big part of the collection," wrote the designer in his program notes. “It is a lot about joy, a lot about freedom, but also about finding restraint within that freedom.”
The vibe: Energetic, sexy, sensual—these...Read more »
The inspiration: The working class, which David Neville and Marcus Wainwright of Rag & Bone have riffed on before. It was never more evident than in those '50s style bowling shirts — Georgia May Jagger wore one that read "Georgia May" on the back.
The vibe: Comfortable, relaxed, unpretentious. Without sacrificing style, of course. It's easy to see how you could kick back in their zippered...Read more »
The inspiration: Jason Wu’s runway pulsed with a French passion and languid luxury that might appeal to characters in a novel by Balzac or Flaubert. The long marbled runway traversed two rooms, punctuated by what looked like white stone archways, as if the models were walking down a long dreamy corridor.
The vibe: Youthful—the slinky panne velvet slip dresses...Read more »
Calvin Klein creative director Francisco Costa celebrated his 10th year at the helm of the fabled house on Thursday in a vast, new space on Varick Street. And while the name of the company may be Calvin Klein, this was definitely Costa’s moment.
“After a decade with the brand, I feel I have respected the legacy of the house, while pushing it forward and I am invigorated by what lies a head,”...Read more »
“I wonder where Ralph will take us this season,” queried one fashion friend pre-Ralph Lauren show. After all, over the past few seasons Lauren has journeyed to China, Spain and Russia for inspiration. At his Thursday morning show on the last day of New York Fashion Week, Lauren took a quick hop across the pond: London, England, circa 1960 and oh what a trip.
Up first: Models in goggle sunglasses,...Read more »
Designers have their niches. Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig own theirs: luxurious, ornate gowns for princess brides and red-carpet sirens.
Their show at New York Public Library, in a space with heavy drapery, gold chairs and plush white carpet, featured 27 gowns and dresses that were a feast for the eye and the imagination.
The duo traveled to different decades to create each piece....Read more »
You can’t blame Rachel Zoe for the fact that the air-conditioning failed in her venue at the tents at Lincoln Center on one of the hottest days of the year. It was an oven. But despite the heat, the show was sassy, smart and very cool. We watched Zoe-obsessed gals in the audience ogling — with lust almost — the baggy ripped up denim shorts and boyfriend jeans, the adorable itsy, bitsy...Read more »
