If Alexander Wang designed hospital gowns, patients might not feel that squeamish about wearing them. And they’d be so much more luxurious.

Alexander Wang is not shy when it comes to taking his bow. It’s an odd phenomenon in the fashion world that so many of the designers of bold, brash, avante-garde clothes take the meekest of bows—they hesitate, take a mincing step forward onto the runway, give a half-hearted wave, then quickly escape to the safety of backstage. You wouldn’t think they’d be so shy.

It was a booming voice that came over the loudspeakers just before the start of the Alexander Wang show, asking the crowd to “refrain from using flash photography.”  A slight pause, then: “That includes cellphones.” 

Seriously?? 

Why not just ask this crowd to stop breathing?  Or to shop at Wal-Mart.  Either would be more conceivable than that unusual request,...
