Whole Foods Market in Jericho
429 N. Broadway Jericho, NY 516-932-1733
Whole Foods Market just added almost 2,000 square feet to its footprint in Jericho, and now you can peruse its expanded produce section fortified with fresh-pressed juice from the new juice bar to the left of the entrance. A 16-ounce cup is $6, whether it's your own combination or one of the market's signatures (such as "veggie sunrise" with carrot, ginger, beets and orange juice, or "green flash" with kale, green apple and lime). Need caffeine to face the fennel? The bar sells a full line of coffee and tea drinks.
Stroll through produce and make your way back to the alcove boasting more than 200 self-serve bins of bulk foods -- more than double the store's previous offerings, said Injoo Park, a Whole Foods team member.
"With bulk items," she said, "customers can try just a little bit of some grain they read about or heard on Dr. Oz."
You'd be hard pressed to think of a grain, nut, legume or seed that isn't at Whole Foods -- many in multiple iterations. Quinoa, millet, hulled hempseed, oats whole, rolled, quick-cooking and steel-cut, a dozen different rices, goji berries, Sicilian almonds, plus plenty of granola, chocolate-covered nuts and even jelly beans. Almost everything is organic.
If you're looking for less newfangled grain products, Whole Foods is now selling, in the bulk alcove, New Jersey-made Severino Pasta, made in small batches and extruded through brass dies (for a rougher, more absorbent texture). On the other side of the store, pretty packages of Severino sell for $7.99 a pound, but the bulk price is only $3.99, and shapes include ziti, rigatoni, radiatori and child-friendly wagon wheels and "apastasaurus."
