A bedroom that will grow with a child

Elsa Soyars is experiencing firsthand that children watch and learn from everything you do. In the designer's case, her 6-year-old daughter, Ariana Pike, is learning to appreciate a well-decorated room. "When she was young, I'd take her on client meetings with me," says Soyars, 36, owner of Elsa R. Soyars Interiors of Southampton. "She got into fashion and decorating early. I used to joke to clients that I was her assistant." Soyars says Ariana is into fashion, flamboyance, pillows, and pink and green. "It all started with the hula girl wallpaper," the mother of three says of the hand-painted grass-cloth wallpaper she purchased at a remnant sale. "I saw it and just had to have it. ... Then, Ariana saw it, and she had to have it." Soyars' goal was to create a room that would grow with Ariana. TOTAL: About $2,400 (Soyars' usual fee for a room makeover of this type would be $1,500). -- Sylvia E. King-Cohen
