Feng shui for the dining room
When Laura Cerrano remodeled the dining room of the Farmingdale home she had shared with her mother, she wanted to make sure that her mom, who died last year, would still be a part of the project.
Cerrano, 26, who owns Feng Shui Long Island, says she tries to help clients understand feng shui and that it can have a prominent or understated position in a home’s decor.
“You also don’t have to spend a lot of money,” she says. “Feng shui isn’t about throwing out the old and buying all new.”
Feng shui practitioners also believe in incorporating the elements — water, fire, wood, earth and metal — into the decor. While it could be as overt as a bubble fountain, it also could be a picture or painting of a waterfall.
“You should use things that relate to your own personal reference to an element,” Cerrano says.
Here’s how Cerrano transformed her space while keeping her mom in mind. Total: About $2,150. Cerrano charges $99 per hour for consultations, and she estimates that a makeover of this type would cost about $1,000. — Sylvia E. King-Cohen
