Tony Spizman of West Hempstead has devised an innovative system to overcome a sunlight-exposure issue that would otherwise affect his ability to grow tomatoes: "I get limited sun in the back," he explains, "so I wheel them out to the front in the afternoon."

Brilliant!

Tony says this is the third year he's been doing this "and it works!"

We look forward to seeing him at this year's Great Long Island Tomato Challenge.

Are you in? This year’s event will take place at 7 p.m. Aug. 26, a Friday, at Newsday headquarters (235 Pinelawn Rd., Melville). Just bring your largest tomato, and you could be crowned tomato king or queen!

Send a photo and details about your tomatoes to jessica.damiano@newsday.com, and you might be featured next.
