It's time to give birds a rest stop

Fall is definitely here, and it is now time to place and stock outdoor bird feeders if you are concerned about our wild birds. Some people think it is not a good idea to put out the bird feeders until it really gets cold, fearing that if the feeders are up now then birds that are supposed to migrate south will not do so, seeing that there is a great food source on hand.

This is not the case at all. It is the shortening of the daylight hours that cause birds to migrate, not a change in food sources. Migrating birds will benefit from being able to stop off at stocked bird feeders on their way south. This way, they do not have to spend precious resources or time looking for food and thus delaying their journey.
