Ombre -- the slow fade from one shade to another -- pops up in fashion every few years. It made news not long ago, as celebs like Beyonce, Drew Barrymore and Rachel Bilson adopted the beachy, blonde-tipped, growing-out-my-roots look for the red carpet.
In clothing, it's strong for spring/summer. Bloomingdale's offers beachy cover-ups (by Echo, Gottex, Ralph Lauren), dresses (Rachel Roy, Erin Fetherston), and tops (Eileen Fisher, Aqua, Quotation). Macy's brims from high (Calvin Klein gown) to low (Levi's trucker vest) to menswear (casual shirts).
In beauty, L'Oreal Paris is also betting on the trend. This winter, the brand launched its new Feria Wild Ombre, the first at-home coloring system that lightens the ends of hair.
Some Long Island salons offer slight variations, "We've been doing 'color melting' -- it's more mature," says John Vater, color director and co-owner of Spa Adriana in Huntington. Similar to ombre, this technique (about $195 to $300) "melts" progressively lighter shades down the hair shaft toward the ends "in a more natural way," he says.
"Getting artistic with hair is great," says Vater. "After all -- it grows back. And it's a lot easier than piercings or a tat'."
