Great places to pick apples on Long Island

Apple-picking season is just getting underway on Long Island’s East End. It’s a family-friendly affair, since many orchards grow dwarf-size trees that are low enough for even toddlers to pick their own fruit and help load up a bag. Early-season pickers will find varieties such as the sweet-tart Honeycrisps and crowd-pleasing Galas ready this week — with late-season favorites likely good-for-baking Jonagolds and classic Granny Smiths ready in early October. If you’re hankering for a certain type of apple, call to confirm which varieties are being picked that day.
