The house-baked bread at this long-standing sandwich shop gives its BLT an edge. The big slabs of toast are fragrant and nutty-sweet, spread with Hellmann's mayonnaise and piled with bacon, shredded iceberg, vine-ripened tomatoes.

Probably the costliest BLT on Long Island, the sandwich at this luxe lunch spot is made with chargrilled Tuscan bread, a mountain of bacon, bright romaine and sweet crimson tomatoes from nearby Schmidt's Market. It's finished with Hellmann's Extra Heavy Mayonnaise and chopped parsley.

At this old-fashioned ice-cream parlor, bacon is paired with very good tomatoes (homegrown in season), iceberg lettuce and Hellmann's mayo to make a sandwich that goes beyond by virtue of first being buttered on the outside, then toasted on the grill.
