When the Hamptons scene starts to simmer, that's when it's time for Dan's Taste of Summer, sponsored by Dan's Papers. The two-evening festival, now in its fifth year, takes over Bridgehampton's Sayre Park on July 17 and 18.
First up, on Friday night, is Grillhampton, pitting East End chefs against their Manhattan counterparts in a grilling contest sponsored by butcher-to-the-stars Pat LaFrieda and hosted by Robert Irvine (star of Food Network's Restaurant Impossible) and Marc Murphy (a judge on Food Network's Chopped).
Among the local chefs competing are Arthur Wolf of Smokin' Wolf BBQ (East Hampton), Colette Connor of Inn Spot on the Bay (Hampton Bays) and Chris Cariello of 1 North Steakhouse (Hampton Bays). Their Manhattan opponents include Harold Moore of Commerce, Julian Medina of Toloache and Ash Fulk of Hill Country Barbecue.
Guests taste the entries from all 16 restaurants (along with plenty of beer, wine and specialty cocktails), then cast their votes for a people's choice winner. Judges Irvine, Murphy, Dan Rattiner (Dan's Papers publisher), LaFrieda and Michael Gelman (producer of Live! With Kelly and Michael) will award a judge's prize. And either LI or NYC will go home with team bragging rights.
General admission is $125, and the event runs from 8 to 11 p.m.
On Saturday night, it's Dan's Taste of Two Forks, an opportunity to sample the cuisine of more than 40 East End restaurants including, from the North Fork, Caci (Southold), American Beech (opening soon in Greenport), First and South (Greenport), Noah's (Greenport) and Grana (Aquebogue). From the South Fork: 75 Main (Southampton), Fresh Hamptons (Sag Harbor), Topping Rose House (Bridgehampton), Gosman's (Montauk) and Fresno (East Hampton). To drink: wines from pretty much all the East End's heavy hitters including Bedell Cellars, Castello di Borghese, Lenz Winery, Lieb Cellars, Macari Vineyards and Wolffer Estate Vineyard.
Hosts are Katie Lee, co-host of the Food Network's The Kitchen, and Michael Symon, star of ABC's The Chew.
General admission starts at 7:30 p.m.; tickets are $170. For more information or to buy tickets for either event, go to danstasteofsummer.com.
Sayre Park is at 156 Snake Hollow Rd., Bridgehampton.
