Gerry Hayden, partner in The North Fork Table & Inn in Southold, has been named a best-chef semifinalist in the annual James Beard Foundation Awards for the third consecutive year.

Hayden, who's battling ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, no longer is the day-to-day chef at the four-star restaurant.

He reached the JBF Awards finals last year in the annual competition for best chef in the northeast. Hayden also was a semifinalist the year before.

No Long Island chef has ever won the Beard award. Nominees will be announced March 18.
