The dish on Long Island's restaurant and food scene.

Heading back from an appointment in Bellmore,  I stumbled upon Lazzat, a restaurant / grocery / halal butcher on the corner of Bellmore and Beltagh Avenues. I entered through the grocery end where someone was expertly butchering a goat. Oh, I thought, this place is serious.

Lazzat has a proper restaurant with table service, but I just availed myself of some of the steam-table lunch offerings: split-pea dal, stewed chickpeas, chicken korma (here, Qorma), creamy and tender; and piquant karahi chicken. Plus some white rice and a couple of naan. Reheated back at the office, everything was good.

Lazzat’s menu pointedly notes that the establishment serves only halal meat, which leads me to believe that it caters, at least in part, to a discerning Pakistani (or Muslim Indian) clientele. Which bodes well for me.

Lazzat Restaurant is at 1892 Bellmore Ave., Bellmore, 516-826-6060.
