A burrito can be whatever you want it to be at the new East Coast Burrito Co. in East Setauket. The new casual counter-serve eatery offers a build-a-burrito option, allowing eaters to get creative with a set list of Tex-Mex ingredients.
People like to customize their food, said chef co-owner Tim Martino, who cooked at Toast in Port Jefferson. For $8.95, you get to pick a protein like beer-battered fish, smoked skirt steak, Tex-Mex pulled pork or spicy tofu and then add a cheese, such as jalapeno Havarti, smoked Gouda or queso fresco. Then comes the salsa and sauce; options include avocado ranch sauce and roasted corn salsa. Everything is wrapped up with Spanish rice, black beans, pico de gallo and sour cream in your choice of a plain or whole wheat tortilla. Or you could get it naked in a bowl.
Also on the menu: chicken tortilla soup ($4.50), breakfast burrito with scrambled eggs and chorizo ($6.95), a Texas taco (on a soft flour tortilla) with Tex-Mex pulled pork and more ($3.95), and for dessert, a loo-rito bananas, chocolate, walnuts and dulce de leche ice cream that's wrapped in a tortilla shell and deep-fried ($8.95).
In nice weather, you may eat outside, if you like, at an umbrella-topped table.
