In the space that had been Cook’s Scratch Kitchen and Bakery in Northport, Cause Cafe opened Wednesday with a promise of more than a cup of joe.
With a bistro-inspired menu and a short list of specialty coffee drinks, Cause Cafe provides jobs for young adults with autism and other cognitive or developmental disabilities. Owner Stacey Wohl says she was inspired to open the cafe and the wholesale arm, Our Coffee with a Cause, for her teenage children, both on the autism spectrum. The two work in and co-own the shop. The hiring process is continuing, Wohl says.
Coffee with a Cause sells coffee from the Brooklyn-based Stone Street Coffee Co., which sources beans from Peru to Ethiopia. Also in the mix, customers will find single-origin coffees for the aficionado and monthly coffee subscriptions.
Chef Christin Butcher, a former cook at Cook’s Scratch Kitchen, has put together breakfast and lunch menus that feature pancakes and waffles, pastries, salads, sandwiches and smoothies from $5 to $15.
Cause Cafe is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
