Kurfone, a long-standing Commack Japanese restaurant, has closed.
The place made its debut back in 1981 and, in its heyday, was a local nexus for sushi lovers. But after 33 years, it had never been renovated. Last time I ate there — less than a year ago — the interior looked rundown and depressing. And the sushi was fairly dull.
Still, Kurofune had fans. A colleague of mine was despondent, since she loved the way Kurofune made its spicy ika (squid), which was sauteed rather than deep-fried. Where, she wondered, could she find such squid again?
Actually, at Takumi, a Japanese restaurant about a mile away. It opened in 2008 under Japan-born chef-owner Yukio Okamura, who had worked at Kurofune for eight years before striking out on his own. In fact, Okamura offers several dishes that were on the menu at Kurofune, some of which he originated.
