The dish on Long Island's restaurant and food scene.

It was a steamy night and I was on a tight schedule. An e-mail I received just before leaving work led me to a place I hadn't ever given much thought to: Tropical Smoothie Café, a colorful fast food eatery with a simple sandwich and salad menu and a long roster of smoothies. I went to the one in East Northport, but there are three others in Suffolk.

As for the food, what impressed me most was a wasabi roast beef sandwich made with rare thinly sliced meat, pepper jack cheese, romaine and wasabi Caesar dressing on a lightly toasted ciabatta roll. Not bad at 374 calories (they claim) for $6.99.

Have to say I preferred my “mocha madness” smoothie over my dinner companion’s “kiwi quencher,” both made with Splenda (our choice), the coffee one 445 calories, the fruit smoothie a more sensible 215. ( Add another 200 or so calories if you’re getting yours with turbinado sugar). All the smoothies here cost $4.99.

Tropical Smoothie Cafés are at 326 Walt Whitman Rd., Huntington Station, 631-427-5100; 532 Larkfield Rd, East Northport, 631-486-4455; 137 Centereach Mall Middle Country Rd., Centereach, 631-981-8767 and 267 Middle Country Road, Selden, 631-696-4780.
