Crave Restaurant and Bar opened last week in the large space across from the Port Washington LIRR station that was most recently — and briefly — occupied by Haven Grill. Owner Sam Alexander worked in the Long Beach restaurants Grillfire and Nick’s Tuscan Grill, neither of which are reopening after being shuttered in the wake of Sandy.
Alexander characterized the new venture as “classic American, with a twist.” The wide-ranging menu certainly covers all the bases: Starters ($8 to $12) include hummus, quesadillas, sliders, mac ’n’ cheese and fried calamari; mains include bbq ribs ($19 for half a rack, $27 for full), Caribbean coconut shrimp ($18), Cajun-style shrimp and chicken ($22). There are pastas and Parms, burgers, cheese steaks, pizzas and steaks (a 14-ounce rib-eye is $29). An intriguing dessert, Sammy’s Surprise ($7), involves assorted fruit and cream cheese, Fluff and Nutella for dipping.
Crave serves dinner every day from 4 p.m. and brunch 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Alexander said the dining rooms were renovated top to bottom. A liquor license should be forthcoming in a few weeks, he said.
Crave in Port Washington is no relation to Crave 11025 in Great Neck, which closed more than a year ago.
