Back in the swim, after taking a big hit from superstorm Sandy, is fatfish Wine Bar & Bistro in Bay Shore. Or at least part of it.
Chef owner Brian Valdini said that the restaurant's wine bar, with seating for 48, as well as its canalside deck are up and running, the result of months of hard labor. All the kitchen equipment had to be replaced, as did the electrical work and Sheetrock. Having spent the winter as “demolition king,” Valdini is now finally able to start cooking.
But the beautiful deck, with its idyllic view of Fire Island ferries crossing Great South Bay, is gone for now, along with the restaurant's former entrance and main dining room. A foundation must be built, along with everything that will go on top of it. Valdini isn’t sure when the entire job will be completed but is fairly confident that the restaurant will be operating at full capacity come summer.
Currently, fatfish is open for lunch, tapas and dinner. An ongoing special, available at all times, features three tapas dishes, along with a bottle of wine, for $39. Among tapas choices — reflecting the time Valdini spent in Spain — are patas bravas, Serrano ham, empanadas and saffron mussels.
