The dish on Long Island's restaurant and food scene.
Tonight at 5 p.m., Fuego Picante makes its debut in the East Meadow space that had been a virtual revolving-door for such restaurants as Kansas City Smokehouse, RUB BBQ, Long Fin, BeSi, Ruby's Famous BBQ and Louis & Marxx.
The owner of Fuego Picante, as well as its predecessors, is the Singh Hospitality Group, whose president, Harendra Singh, said he doesn't believe the site could be jinxed. I make no excuses for failing to provide what people wanted there before, Singh said.
The new contender will offer Mexican food with a barbecue component. Corporate executive chef David Salony developed the recipes in conjunction with the restaurants executive chef Joe Tinnely, who previously cooked at Mitch & Tonis in Williston Park. On the menu are smoked short rib nachos ($11), carne asada tacos ($21), hickory smoked BBQ half chicken ($17) and Mexi-shrimp in a roasted tomatillo-chile butter sauce ($23).
The place was redesigned inside and out by Delago Associates, the firm also responsible for the decor of Jewel in Melville. Singh said the exterior was created with an eye toward visibility from the street a past problem with its sign positioned high enough to be seen by passing cars.
Currently, Fuego Picante will serve dinner nightly. In about a month, Singh said, lunch should kick in.
