Confectionary architects, get cracking: The Chocolate Duck, Long Island’s premier baking-supply emporium, is sponsoring a gingerbread house competition on Nov. 16. The registration deadline is Nov. 1.
Entries need not be actual houses. Any structure — real or imaginary — is eligible for entry: house, train station, bridge, ship, lighthouse, spaceship. However, the structure should be inspired by Long Island. (I’d love to see the Nassau Coliseum committed to gingerbread before it is destroyed.)
The entries will be judged by Christina Bisbee, co-owner of The Chocolate Duck and a contestant on Food Network’s "Challenge" and "Last Cake Standing"; Micheline Cummings, owner of Madame Butterfly Cakes in Babylon and Ralph Ekstrand, mayor of Farmingdale.
Cash prizes and gift certificates will be awarded in each of four divisions: Adult amateur, adult professional, children 11 to 17, children under 10.
