Actually, I've been eating the sfingi and the zeppole that are part of the holiday feast since late January. Some bakeries start the festivities very, very early. God bless them.
The sfingi and zeppole are fried pastry beauties, one stuffed with cannoli cream, the other with Italian custard. I invariably go for the sfingi, with the cannoli cream and a curl of citron. But, if only the custard production is available, I don't mind, either. Sometimes the terms are used interchangeably, too.
Most Italian bakeries will be offering them tomorrow. Here are four that do an especially good job. Figure $3 to $4 each.
