The dish on Long Island's restaurant and food scene.
Whose ribs reign supreme? Find out on Sunday, Oct. 11, when the Hicksville Fire Department Volunteer Hose Company 4 hosts its fifth annual barbecued rib cook-off in the Sears Auto Center parking lot at 195 N. Broadway.
About a dozen teams will compete for cash prizes. The judges will be local members of the international Barbecue federation, BBQ Brethren, but there will also be a people's choice award. Here's how it works: $10 buys five tickets, four of which are good for one rib from any of the teams. Use the fifth ticket to vote for the rib you liked best. Want more ribs? Buy more tickets.
Also on hand: Vendors selling sausage and peppers, homemade lemonade, live music, and a classic car show (also judged).
Proceeeds will be divided between the Hicksville Fire Department and the Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged.
The first four rib cook-offs were held at Cantiague Park. This year, to make sure no one drives by the event, the organizers are erecting a 20-foot-tall inflated pink pig.
