The dish on Long Island's restaurant and food scene.

Spectacular lunch at House of Dosas. The occasion was the introduction of two mutual friends who are both passionate about Indian cooking. I sat back and kvelled while they ordered up a storm. Soon the table was crowded with idly (steamed little medallions made from rice and lentils), sambar sauce, coconut chutney and lots of dosas—immense, lacy pancakes filled with all manner of savories. I’ll be honest, I lost track of which were which, but I especially liked the one filled with spiced paneer, homemade cheese.

Since my restaurant fantasy is having someone else order for me, I was in heaven. Afterward, we went across the street to Patel Brothers (the Indian supermarket at 415 S. Broadway, Hicksville, 516-465-3969) for exegeses on basmati rice and fresh coconuts.
